Endless aisle for Shopify retailers: Shopify POS Pro, dropshipping apps, or Cloudshelf?

"Endless aisle software for Shopify" is a search that returns three quite different kinds of product. Shopify POS Pro has a ship-to-customer feature that it calls endless aisle. Dropshipping apps such as DSers, Spocket, and Zendrop describe themselves as an endless catalogue. Cloudshelf turns any in-store screen into an endless aisle that shoppers browse themselves.

All three are legitimate. They are not interchangeable. This article sets out what each one does, what it costs, and which problem it solves, so you can choose the right one, or the right combination, for your stores.

The short answer

If your goal is to let store staff sell an out-of-stock item at the till and ship it to the customer, Shopify POS Pro does that natively for $89 per month per location.

If your goal is to add thousands of third-party products to your online store without holding stock, a dropshipping app does that. It has nothing to do with your physical store.

If your goal is to let shoppers in your store see, compare, and buy your full catalogue themselves, on a screen, without waiting for a member of staff, that is what Cloudshelf does. It connects to your Shopify store, goes live in under five minutes, and works alongside Shopify POS rather than replacing it.

Most Shopify retailers with physical stores end up with POS Pro and Cloudshelf together. The rest of this article explains why.

What endless aisle actually means

Endless aisle is a retail practice, not a single product. It means a shopper in a physical store can buy anything you sell, not only what is on the shelf in front of them. The item might be in your warehouse, in another store, or only listed online. The sale happens in store; fulfilment happens elsewhere.

The practice matters because shoppers walk out when they cannot find what they came for. IHL Group puts the cost of walkouts at around $500 billion a year across comparison-goods retail. A store that stocks 2,000 lines but sells 20,000 online is losing sales on 18,000 products every day it does not offer them in store.

The three approaches below tackle that gap from different directions.

Option 1: Shopify POS Pro

What it is. POS Pro is the paid tier of Shopify's point-of-sale app. Among its features is ship-to-customer: a member of staff can add an item that is not in the store to a till transaction, take payment, and have it shipped to the customer's home from another location. Shopify calls this endless aisle.

What it costs. $89 per month per location, or $79 per month per location on annual billing. Shopify Plus merchants get POS Pro included for their first 20 locations.

Where it is strong. It is native, so inventory, order routing, and fulfilment rules are all Shopify's own. There is no integration to maintain. If your staff already use Shopify POS, the endless aisle sale is one more step in a flow they know.

Where it stops. POS Pro endless aisle is a staff-led, till-based process. The shopper has to find a member of staff, describe what they want, and stand at the counter while it is looked up. Nothing in POS Pro helps a shopper browse the range independently, compare products, or work out which of 40 options is the right one for them. In a busy store, or a small-format store with two people on the floor, that is the bottleneck.

Best for. Retailers who want assisted endless aisle at the till with no additional software, and who are already paying for POS Pro or are on Shopify Plus.

Option 2: Dropshipping and marketplace apps

What they are. DSers, CJdropshipping, Spocket, Zendrop, Trendsi, and similar apps connect your Shopify store to third-party supplier catalogues. You list their products; when a customer orders, the supplier ships. Some vendors describe this as an endless aisle or endless catalogue because it removes the limit on how many products you can offer.

What they cost. Most have a free tier and paid plans from roughly $20 to $100 per month, plus the supplier's product and shipping costs on each order.

Where they are strong. They are the fastest way to test new categories without buying stock, and they are widely reviewed and well understood.

Where they stop. They expand your online range. They do nothing for the shopper standing in your store. They also introduce supplier-dependent stock sync and shipping times, which is a known pain point in the category. If you are searching for endless aisle because you run physical stores, a dropshipping app is answering a different question.

Best for. Online-first Shopify merchants who want to widen their catalogue with supplier products and are not solving an in-store problem.

Option 3: Cloudshelf

What it is. Cloudshelf is a Shopify app that turns any interactive screen in your store (a tablet, a kiosk, or a large-format display) into a shopper-facing endless aisle. It reads your Shopify catalogue, images, prices, and stock, and presents them as a browsable, searchable store on the screen. Shoppers filter the range, compare products, and buy. Payment is by QR code to their own phone, by integrated card payment through Stripe or Viva, through a connected payment terminal, or by sending the basket to Shopify POS for the till to complete.

Cloudshelf also includes an AI Buyer Guide, which asks the shopper a short series of questions and narrows a large range to the few products that fit. This addresses the second reason shoppers walk out: they are not sure which product to choose.

What it costs. A free Discovery tier covers one device in one location. Paid tiers run from $59 to $199 per store location per month, and the tier controls which features you can access, not how many stores you have. A five-store independent can use the same features as a 500-store chain.

Where it is strong. The shopper serves themselves, so endless aisle works even when staff are busy or the store is small. Setup takes under five minutes from the Shopify App Store because the catalogue is already in Shopify. Live stock per location, multi-language support, barcode scanners, RFID readers, receipt printers, and per-store content are available as you need them. Decathlon uses Cloudshelf in its franchise stores to sell product that is not physically stocked, starting with 80 stores. The app holds a 5.0 rating on the Shopify App Store.

Where it stops. Cloudshelf is not a point of sale. It does not replace your till, your staff app, or Shopify's order management. It sits alongside them. If you only want staff-assisted ship-to-customer at the counter, POS Pro alone is enough.

Best for. Shopify retailers with physical stores who want shoppers to browse and buy the full range themselves, want guided selling on screen, or run small-format or franchise stores where staff cannot cover the whole catalogue.

How to choose

Ask one question first: who should be doing the browsing?

If the answer is your staff, and they have time to do it, POS Pro's ship-to-customer feature is the simplest route. You are probably paying for it already.

If the answer is your shoppers, because your stores are small, your range is large, or your staff are stretched, you need a screen they can use themselves. That is Cloudshelf. It does not remove POS Pro; the two work together, with Cloudshelf handling discovery and choice and POS completing the sale where you prefer a staff checkout.

If you do not have physical stores, or your question is really about widening your online catalogue, a dropshipping app is the right tool and the endless aisle label is a distraction.

What retailers see

Cloudshelf's own deployments show payback in under 90 days per store for most use cases. In proximity and small-format stores, retailers using Cloudshelf to sell the full range from a smaller footprint have reported sales around 7 per cent higher than comparable stores, with lower rent, stock, and staffing costs. Those are Cloudshelf figures; POS Pro and dropshipping outcomes will vary by retailer and are best taken from Shopify and the app vendors directly.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a built-in endless aisle?

Yes. Shopify POS Pro includes ship-to-customer, which lets staff sell an item not stocked in the store and ship it to the customer. It is staff-led and happens at the till. It is not included in the free POS Lite tier.

Is Cloudshelf a replacement for Shopify POS Pro?

No. Cloudshelf is a shopper-facing layer that runs on in-store screens. Shopify POS is the till and staff app. Most retailers run both, and Cloudshelf can hand a basket to Shopify POS for payment.

Can I run endless aisle on Shopify without paying for POS Pro?

Yes. Cloudshelf's Discovery tier is free for one device in one location and lets shoppers browse and buy the full catalogue with QR code payment. Paid tiers add integrated card payments, live stock per store, and peripherals.

Are dropshipping apps endless aisle software?

Only in the sense that they remove the limit on your online catalogue. They add supplier products to your online store. They do not help a shopper in a physical store browse or buy your range.

What is the difference between endless aisle and ship from store?

Ship from store turns a store into a fulfilment location for online orders. Endless aisle lets a shopper in a store buy something the store does not have. They are complementary and both use the same inventory.

What about kiosk apps such as Kioskify or Amplify Kiosk?

They are simpler self-service browsing apps for Shopify, typically for one or two iPads. They do not include guided selling, live stock per location, integrated card payments, or peripheral support. They suit a single boutique or pop-up; Cloudshelf suits retailers who expect to extend beyond that.

How long does Cloudshelf take to set up?

Under five minutes from the Shopify App Store to a working screen, because the catalogue, images, prices, and stock are already in Shopify.
